Story

I'm Matt. I've spent the last 5 years pushing my mind and body to the extreme, running 10+ ultra marathons (50-265km) around islands on almost every continent in the world. That journey for me was very personal. By identifying hard things that felt daunting to me, and completing them, I was able to build confidence and character. But in the midst of these chaotic adventures, my worldview also began to expand. You see, by definition, adventure takes you to places that do not resemble home. The people you meet, and the circumstances in which you meet them, are often dramatically different from those that feel familiar. Whether it was on the islands of Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, or Vanuatu, I began to understand what it meant to live in poverty. Simultaneously, I began to learn how to experience joy and peace in-spite of material circumstances. When I moved to Bali, I began to try to find ways that I could continue to push myself whilst simultaneously contributing in some way to the world that I was so graciously welcome into. That's where, along with my co-founders, we began EffortX Foundation. People come to us with the desire to push themselves, and we help bridge this effort to impact. We call that, Effort Exchange (EffortX). Since then, we have established a Yayasan in Indonesia with a clear mission, to provide free school meals to children in Sumba. It’s an island we first visited during one of our early missions, where we built a water tank and delivered support to communities facing severe conditions during the dry season. This story points to something simple but important. Those of us who have the privilege to choose our challenges carry a responsibility to use that choice well. To show up, push ourselves, and to turn that effort into something that reaches beyond us, towards people who do not have the same freedom to choose. That said, I have decided to take on another challenge that I find daunting. Stepping into a professional Muay Thai ring after a year of casual training, and just a few weeks of private coaching. I’ll be stepping into the ring knowing I’m not the most experienced, not the most prepared, and not the most comfortable. But that’s the point. It’s a challenge that demands something of me, physically and mentally, and one I’ve chosen to take on. This time, it’s not just for me. Every round, every session, every step into that ring is tied to the children in Sumba who do not get to choose their challenges, but live them daily. If this resonates with you, I’d ask you to be part of it. Help us turn effort into something that feeds, supports, and reaches people who need it.
