Building Water Tank - Pogawatu, Sumba

Supply & installation of a 18,000lt water tank in Pogawatu, Sumba

Project Overview

Pogawatu is a remote village in Sumba, Indonesia, where families previously relied on a distant natural muddy spring for water. Women and children walked several kilometres daily, carrying heavy containers through steep terrain just to meet basic needs. In partnership with local leaders, EffortX Foundation helped design and build a permanent 18,000-litre concrete water tank at the spring. This was not a temporary solution — it was a long-term, gravity-fed system intended to serve the village for years to come. All materials were transported manually with the help of local community members, and the project was completed while living alongside the villagers. This ensured trust, accountability, and local ownership of the solution. The Pogawatu water tank represents Effortx Foundations mission in action: delivering immediate impact while laying the foundation for long-term sustainability, health, and dignity.

Impact & Goals

Primary Goal

Provide access to clean water for Pogawatu village by eliminating the daily burden of water collection, improving health and hygiene, and restoring time, dignity, and opportunity to families through a permanent, community-owned water tank.

Expected Outcomes

An 18,000-litre gravity-fed water tank is constructed next to the chief's house.

Daily water collection time for women and children is reduced by multiple hours per day.

Improved hygiene and reduced risk of waterborne illness through consistent access to clean water.

Local community members are involved in construction and trained to maintain the water system, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Pogawatu becomes a replicable case study for future water infrastructure projects in remote regions.
