Community-led youth soccer league in Malekula, Vanuatu, promoting health, discipline, and unity through sport.
The South East Malekula (Port vila, Vanuatu) Youth Soccer League is a community-run sports initiative based on the island of Malekula in Malampa Province, Vanuatu. Coordinated by Pastor John Thomas, the league currently brings together 12 soccer teams from 7 surrounding areas, creating a structured and positive environment for young people to participate in healthy competition. Sport plays a vital role in our community. It provides discipline, teamwork, leadership, and a strong alternative to negative influences such as drug and alcohol use. For many youth in Malekula, this league is one of the only organised pathways for physical activity, social connection, and personal growth. Despite strong community engagement, the league faces major challenges due to limited infrastructure and resources. Playing fields require upgrading to ensure safety, teams lack proper equipment and uniforms, and there are no tools available for ongoing field maintenance. Without support, it is difficult to sustain and grow the league long-term. This project seeks funding to develop basic sporting infrastructure, provide essential equipment and uniforms for all 12 teams, and ensure the league is sustainable for future seasons. With the right support, this initiative will strengthen youth development, promote unity across villages, and secure the future of organised sport in South East Malekula.
